LOUISIANA BATON ROUGE MISSION

THE VISION OF THE SOUTH

"Make no small plans: This is the vision I have for the South. I believe that one day the South will baptize more people into the church than all other English speaking missions in the world together....We will see the time when we will baptize hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands...In your day you will see a million members of the church in the South. There will be temples plural in the Southern States. What a great call you have to serve with these marvelous people." President Spencer W. Kimball

Norma

Todos Las Personas,

This week was awesome. Norma's baptism was a hit.  We were cracking jokes to her because the water was so hot. When she put her foot in it she yanked it back out, but she went in any way.  She was crying when she came up out of the water.  She was so excited to get the Holy Ghost.  I enjoyed it a ton and so did she. I am really excited to teach her the new member lessons.

We did a lot this week; it was crazy.  Everything is starting to click and Spanish isn't that hard.  I mean I am not really good at it but I can get my point across. The hardest part is the constant switching from English to Spanish.

My days now are so different but always lots of studing and lots of seeing less-actives (because there are so many).  My comp goes home next week, so he just wants to go home. Because he's leaving people always feed us for dinner and lunch.  Sometimes two and three appointments per meal.  I'm sick of eating.  I am a bit scared to get a new companion.

Love,
Elder Andrews

PS  This is in the MTC.  Doesn't it look like me?  I really like it.

Dear President Wall, Elder Mellor Going Home

Author: Andrews, Zachary Jacob

President Wall,

This week has been strange, just in the fact of Elder Mellor going home and I am getting a new  companion. I really like Elder Vaughn but he is different, and so, that is different and I have to keep telling myself that difference is not a bad thing. This week I have seen my testimony grow in that I know that God sent me here for a reason. Now I say this because the people in the West Bank are so awesome. I have been really nervous about taking over the area, not that I really did because Elder Vaughn is still training me and he sorta knows the area, and without fail the members have tried so hard to help me with everything. Everything from Spanish to rides you name it they are willing and ready to help. I has really helped my testimony. I am striving to be exactly obedient and I am seeing the blessings from that.

The unity in our companionship is good but the Unity in the District is not. Everyone is fine but Elder Mastache and Cisneros but you probably know more about it than I do, so I will just leave it at that. This week I have learn a few things in the Book of Mormon. The main thing that I am thinking about right now is the power that it has, in every single lesson we had this week I had so scripture pop into my head and it has just fit like a glove. I am really excited to have more experiences like that so that at the end of my mission I can be as happy as Ammon after his mission. And I can boast of my God, because without him I know I am nothing.

Dear President Wall, Exactly Obedient

President,

I really enjoyed our interview on Sunday. This week has been slow, it seems like everyone has been canceling on us and that is hard. But it was a good week I working on becoming exactly obedient, and little by little I will reach that goal. I have been reading in the Book of Mormon almost everyday trying to finish by the tenth. Norma was the star of the show this week because of her baptism and all the little things that we had to do to get her ready for that day. And now we are going to start doing the member lessons with her. I don't really know how to go about that and Elder Mellor has made it clear that he would love to try but that he doesn't think it will work. But we are going to try anyway. We are really working well together and it is a shame that he is going home but someone else will take his place and they'll be great.

Week of Service

My life is good.  This week was slower because our numbers [of people to teach] were down a lot from all the other weeks.  That doesn't matter per se but it sure makes the week go by slowly because you have nothing to do.  So we did a ton of service last week.  It was crazy.  My comp and I together had 28 hours of service.  Norma (my investigator) is getting baptized Saturday!  I'm excited.

My comp goes home in two weeks and it is killing me all the talk of home that we do.  I don't think I will get transferred to a new area, but will get a new companion here.   I'm excited for this transfer.

Louisiana is not getting any cooler at all.

Love you,
Elder Andrews

Dear President Wall, Gaps in My Testimony

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

President,

Sorry that I have not written you the last little bit, it just slips my mind on my way to write my family. But I am going to try a different system and that will solve the problem.  Anyway this last week has been interesting. My Spanish is growing.....slowly and I am really starting to enjoy speaking it. The biggest problem I have with it is the constant switching that I have to do in one lesson half will be in English the other half in Spanish and that keeps me on my toes.

My testimony has become more defined as I have been out here. Let me explain: I have really started to see what parts are not as strong as they need to be. For the most part I have faith. I know it is true, I know that if I got the impression to turn the Mississippi around it would, that is the power of God. But I have seen that although that is true I struggle with having the faith to see someone struggling and not think, why in the world is that necessary? Why does that person not just accept this gospel? A better example is Katrina: why did God send Katrina if it would destroy the wards down here? But after all that, at the end of the day in my nightly prayers I have to say "Lord I believe. Help thou my unbelief." And trust that God has my back cause I know he does. Thank you and I look forward to our interview on Sunday

Elder Andrews's Mission Scripture

But behold I said unto them that. As the Lord liveth, and as we live, we will not go down unto our father in the wilderness until we have accomplished the thing which the Lord hath commanded us. 1 Nephi 3:15

Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission

The first branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized in New Orleans with 334 members in 1841. The prophet Joseph Smith sent the first missionary to New Orleans in March of that year. After reaching 169 members in 1849, the New Orleans branch disbanded because of the threat of serious disease in the area. The Southern States Mission, which included Louisiana opened in 1878, but the first missionaries were not sent to the state until nearly 20 years later. Missionary work spread throughout the state during the early twentieth century and by 1930, there were 1500 members. The first ward was established in Shreveport in 1953 and the first stake in New Orleans in 1955.In 1975, the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission was created and by 1980, there were over 12,500 members in the state of Louisiana. By 1989, Louisiana had 22,000 members in seven stakes. In 1998, the First Presidency announced the building of a temple in Baton Rouge. That temple was dedicated on 16 July, 2000.The Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission extends from Natchitoches South to the East and West borders through the state including the Gulf of New Orleans. The mission also includes the South West corner of Mississippi including Natchez, Liberty, and Macomb.

STANDARD OF TRUTH

"The standard of truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly and independent, till it has penetrated every continent and visited every climb, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the great Jehovah shall say 'The work is done.'"
