THE VISION OF THE SOUTH

"Make no small plans: This is the vision I have for the South. I believe that one day the South will baptize more people into the church than all other English speaking missions in the world together....We will see the time when we will baptize hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands...In your day you will see a million members of the church in the South. There will be temples plural in the Southern States. What a great call you have to serve with these marvelous people." President Spencer W. Kimball

To PH: You Can Slap Me

Author: Andrews, Zachary Jacob

I really like my companion he is a really cool Guy. I am really excited to be his companion and to teach him all the fine points of Missionary work. So one Thursday we where going to see Richardo and I told Elder Peterson that he had to invite him to baptism. He said that he didn't know the Baptismal invitation in Spanish and I said well we better learn it then!! So he had the opportunity to ask him and He said yes! (sure it took a little bit of explaining from me....) It was awesome and he was a little bit giddy after, It was funny. So this branch is sucking everything they can our of me take last Sunday for example. I translated, lead the music in Sacrament, Then taught Gospel Principles and then Taught gospel Doctrine. It was awesome! I am just running so much I might go a little bit crazy! Nothing to bad but just a little bit. I am having tons of fun and we are working our brains out.

The District is doing good there are new faces so we are getting to know each other. Sister Roberts in our interview made it clear to me that she didn't want to be here. I told her basically tough cause you at least have one transfer here and so you better make the most of it! She agreed and I am going to try my very best to have some fun activities on P-day so that she will begin to enjoy herself. She is also a little wary of Elders and I believe it is because there has been several Elders that have had need to be frog alerted because of her, or at least she thinks so. In this regard I am well suited. President if I ever have the need to get frog alerted because of my own lack of ability to control my emotions, you can slap me. We are working hard and will continue to become more and more diligent as a companionship and as a district!
Love ya,
Elder Andrews

I am so proud of you for having Elder Peterson give the baptism challenge. That was a mission defining experience for him. Also it is great that you are having such great experience in the church. You have to rely on the spirit when you are so needed.

From PH: Transfers

Author: President Hansen
This past week was busy, stressful and wonderful. Again, I want to say thank you for being such wonderful servants of our Father in Heaven. I have the utmost respect for each of you. I am grateful to each of you for your faith in accepting and working with the challenges of another transfer. Believe me when I say I know how hard it can be to have a new companion and area and all the stresses that that entails. I am proud of each of you.

One of the missionaries pointed out to me that frequently, when they bring less actives or investigators to church for the first time, they feel uncomfortable because their clothes aren't like everyone else's and they feel out of place. They feel judgement from members or even a lack of acceptance and inclusion. This breaks our hearts as missionaries. She asked me how can we help ameliorate this lack of sensitivity?

When we go to Ward Council we have the chance to explain our concerns to the ward leaders. We don't need to wait until we have that investigator coming to church. We can do it now. Let them know that we are putting love and effort into bringing in the lost sheep and we need the members to accept and love them too. The bishop may be able to help our less active friends and investigators with some clothes but the ward council can definitely help by coming and inviting the new comer to sit with them and making them feel like a part of the "in crowd". If that doesn't happen, of course, we do our best to show them that we love them and are happy to have them there. We should sit by them and introduce them to all the warmest people in the branch or ward. When we speak in Church, we can let everyone know how important it is for members to be kind and charitable to the new visitors.

This isn't a one time message, but it must be hammered into the psyche of the ward over and over. I would also call a member or two the night before and ask them to help you with the people who are coming. You will be surprised how much this advance notice will help. Again, I want you all to know how much love and confidence sister Hansen and I have in each of you. We admire and respect each of you. We have seen your kindness and your competence. I feel like we have the best teaching missionaries that I have seen anywhere.

We are seeing great fruit from our renewed vigor in our work.
Thanks to all.

Zone Training

So this week we had ZTM and it was really spiritual. Mostly because the missionaries in the zone really needed some extra spiritual juice. We have a new president and the transition has been really hard for lots of people! They called me Thursday after studies and asked if I could instruct on Friday I said yes. I would like to share with all of you my instruction:

In Moses 1:4  Heavenly father calls Moses "my son."  Now for us that is no big deal.  We all know that we are sons and daughters of God. But let us look at Moses and his life for a minute. Here is a boy who isn't even supposed to be alive.  He is, by necessity abandon by his parents and found by the Pharaoh's daughter floating down the river in a basket. This is where he got his name MOSES means "Son of..." We see this in the name Ramses or Ramoses; it is a root. So here is a boy who has gone his whole life not knowing who he was or why he was here. Whose literal name means Son of None. He is alone and then all of the sudden in Moses 1:4 he knows. He knows who he is and what he has to do! All of the sudden he goes from being a nobody to being so cool. Now do we know who we are and what we have to do. For me, my purpose is easy.  It is spelled out for me in Preach my Gospel, but maybe you all have a little different or completely different purpose, but we know who we are. We are children of the most powerful being in the universe! We are heirs to his kingdom!  There is power in that! The faith and the confidence that that brings will change your life it you choose to do so.

Before my mission I liked to listen to Ted Talks and there was one that was talking about stress. They did an experiment they asked about 100 people in their mid 50s if stress was good for them or not. If it is going to extend their life or shorten it. The responders were split about 50/50. Then they just watched the obituaries and waited to see. What they found out was amazing. They found out that the responders were right! The people who thought stress was bad for them and that it would shorten their lives were right and they died sooner. The people who thought that stress was good for them, that my racing heart is helping me, lived on average 10 years longer!

Now why does this matter? Who gives a crap? What this means is not only is Agency a gift but it is a power. There is a talk by Richard C. Edgley titled Faith: The Choice Is Yours. In this talk he addresses the power of choice and our ability to choose. That is how awesome you are! You can choose such things!

Lastly, Mom showed me something before my mission that I didn't get the significant  of until Thursday.  It is an experiment called Emoto's Water Experiment: The Power of Thought.  In this Emoto looked at water through a telescope while people prayed, argued, and spoke kindly to one another. The water took notice of them and changed! It cleared and crystalized during the different activities. The point is that the water responded. It is aware of you! Because of your heritage the water is obeying and responding to you. You are so awesome that the very elements are watching you. This is why we need to share the Gospel and share how awesome each and everyone of you are, everyone!!

Anyway, love you all,

Elder Andrews

Family Visits New Orleans (August 4)

So you're home now?  How long where you on vacation?  Were Uncle Jake and Aunt Jane with you the whole time or only parts? Grandma too? That is really fun!! So you went to the West Bank?  What did you think?

 Answer:  WE LOVED IT!
Elder Andrews's family drove across the US and stopped by New Orleans and Gretna to see his old apartment.  Here is it!

Baptism on the Books! (July 28)

This week we had am amazing opportunity. We invited Suje (sue-hey) to be baptized!! She is going to be baptized on September 27.  She wants to wait until after her baby is born!! We had and awesome lesson and asked her and she said yes. Awesome!!!! This week we have been running and going crazy trying to see people and help them. WE tried but often times we failed this week. It got slow after a point.

Love you the church is true!

Tobasco Factory (July 21)

I am good!  We went to the Tabasco Factory this morning; that is why I am so late.   It was boring... and we used all our miles....and girls are slow getting ready so it takes too long to go anywhere.

As it turns out, I don't really even like tabasco.  I think it just taste like vinegar.  But we tried tons of different flavors.  So I guess I'm an expert.

New Companion, Promptings (July 14)

My new comp is Elder Burch. He has been out nearly 19 months and struggles with Spanish. He is really obedient. I am really working hard to help him feel included in our district.  Our district is really unified and I am worried that he might feel left out, so I am going to do everything I can.

That is cool about trek, and don't worry about the girls who left. My trek ma and pa never let us leave and always got us in trouble for stupid stuff like getting up late. That is why I like a mission No Distractions. I mean some days I wish I could have a distractions.  That is why I like the story of Peter walking on the water because it shows us that as we look to the Savior through our priorities, we can look up and walk but when we look down on the world around us at the water we start to fall.

So a story.  Last week we were going to someone's house and I got an impression saying, Go to Joels.... OK sounds good to me... so we went over there and for the first time he answered the door!! So we talk to him all about  his mission and had an awesome conversation! The spirit was so strong, He committed to come to Family Home Evening and then Church. The little promptings of the spirit are really been thrown at me all the time.  It is awesome.

Foreign vs Domestic Missions (July 8)

You want to know what I think is the difference between domestic and foreign missions?  All missions are different. I know missions that are really good and missions that are really bad. I think all missions kind of go through stages.  Right now this mission is in a good stage we are all pretty obedient ant those of that aren't hide it. But there were years, like right before Katrina, that it was bad.  Really bad and again in the 90s really, really bad.  I have heard of other missions that are about the same. But as a rule, I think foreign missions are more obedient (less ways to be disobedient).  It being a new culture and all.

New President! (June 30)

Hi I'm back. My companion Elder Herbert is getting transferred so that means I have to take over another area....  My district is us, the sister missionaries and a senor couple who are awesome.  The sister missionaries love hispanics and react well to them. They are good missionaries.  Really new and but getting to know the ropes.  They do a good job.  I don't know where my companion is going or who I am getting.

The new prez is good!  I think he will be good for the mission because he is going to make us uncomfortable. With Prez. Wall we got comfortable.  We knew him and what he wanted. Comfort is not a good thing on a mission cause then you get complacent and disobedient. The new president is also pushing numbers.  That is hard for some missionaries but numbers are important as long as they have people attached to them.  Meaning lessons taught in a week, just a numerical record of what we are doing.

Dear Sisters and Elders,
Again, I loved reading the letters. I am so grateful to our Father in Heaven that I am associated with such wonderful young men and women. I was touched as I read of your committed work and was pleased to see the success that we are having in getting the mission to more acceptable numbers on finding, teaching, baptizing, retaining and reactivating. We are more concerned about the people behind the numbers than the numbers, but what is happening is exciting. The investigators with a baptism date has increased from 13 per week to 19, sacrament meeting attendance by investigators has nearly doubled in the last month, we have 3 & 1/2 times more lessons taught with a member present and 3 & 1/2 times more new investigators than we had four weeks ago.

This just shows me that you are feeling the urgency of the Lord's work and He is blessing us for your faithfulness. We will continue to see these numbers improve as we,
1) pray with faith,
2) rely on the Spirit of the Holy Ghost to direct your thoughts and actions,
3) teach the Preach My Gospel lessons effectively,
4) work with the ward and branch leaders and missionaries,
5) diligently strive to obey the schedule and rules with exactness,
6) show our sincere love to our companions, the ward members and our investigators,
7) use our study and planning time effectively.

Think what would happen in this mission if we all work together with a unity of purpose and showed the Lord that we want to do what he asks us to do. We can't focus on one aspect of the work and think that will build the Church. For the work to move forward we all need to focus on the broader vision, the "Work of Salvation" which includes: finding, teaching, baptizing, activating and reactivating. If we work on less than all five areas of focus the kingdom will not move forward. Finding is not enough, teaching is not enough, etc. Our success is the exaltation of God's children.

I am happy that we now stay involved with our new convert for at least three months. Most investigators and new members commit sin. They need someone to help back them up. They will help us with our finding efforts.

Often those we seek to reactivate have been offended. Elder Holland said we should ask them, "what happened before what happened, happened." In other words they need to be reminded of how they felt when they were taught and baptized, when they felt the spirit that convinced them that the Church was true. When they think of that they will start on the road to reactivation.

That is just a long winded way of saying that we love you, and we want you to keep on improving. Sister Hansen says to tell you that she loves being around each of you and loves you all. I will second that.

Here are some quotes from your letters:
----My companion _____and myself have seen a difference in the amount of work we do lately when we've asked and done what we can to more fully align our wills with our Heavenly Father's will. We have had a little bit better week. An extra lesson or two here and there. An extra investigator here and there. Extra lessons taught. More friends we have made. Even if they weren't interested in hearing the gospel message.

----We were in district meeting and ____ was giving an instruction on feeling successful. And at one point ______ pointed brought up something another missionary said. If you are brave enough to ask the Lord every night in your prayer if you were successful to him, you will never have to wonder if you were or were not successful because he will let you know. Well I did that this week and I have to say every day I have felt the spirit super strong that I was successful...but at the same time thoughts and impressions still came to my head of things to improve on. It was a super cool experience. Hopefully more missionaries can start doing that. It feels good to be told every day by the spirit that my effort was enough.

----We also started a new thing where we are inviting a sister in RS every week to pass out a copy of the Book of Mormon with her testimony in it and then report the next week. We started it off by inviting sisters to share their experiences with passing out copies in the past. The Spirit that filled the room as they told their experiences was so strong! When I first came into these wards they were not very missionary motivated but it is so cool to see how the Work of Salvation is really starting to take hold in these wards and touch the hearts of the members. I love it!!!!

----This week has been absolutely awesome! Yesterday was great! I've been able to hear about a lot of great miracles from all of the missionaries in the district. I think that one of the greatest blessings about serving as a district leader is being able to hear all of the great stories from the other missionaries during call-ins. From the calls last night, it sounds like our whole district is just having a blast being missionaries and they're all doing great things. I'm also really grateful for all of the other missionaries that I'm blessed to be serving around. They are my family and I love them all as if they were my brothers and sisters. One of my favorite parts about being a missionary is being able to serve around such great friends. They make my daily life a whole lot easier to push through and they make it a whole lot more fun too.

I could have included many more equally wonderful thoughts. You are all amazing. Thank you for your faithfulness.

FROM PH: Testimony Grows

Sent Date: Saturday, August 9, 2014
Author: President Hansen
Dear Elders and Sisters,

When I read the letters each week my testimony grows of this great work. I know that the Lord is in it, and that you have been magnified to be able to accomplish everything you are needed to do. We also finished the first round of interviews this week and that was such a wonderful experience to know you all better and see the desire you have to serve the Lord with all your hearts, might, minds and strength. Sister Hansen and I love you all more than you can imagine.

Great things are happening in the mission. I was thrilled to read letter after letter about how your attendance in your wards and branches had grown over the last week. with many less active members and many investigators attending for the first time. Here is one example:

------- It is true that being immersed in the Work of Salvation brings more joy to one's soul than anything else! I was overwhelmed with joy yesterday at church! Our work focusing on the Less Actives and Part member families is paying off. We had 107 people attend church yesterday when it is usually around 85. Granted that was the work of 10 missionaries, but it still made me so happy even though a lot of the people at church weren't from my area. We hold Priesthood in the chapel overflow and during opening exercises there was not enough seats to fit everyone! I was blown away with the progress that we are seeing with our ward. During Sacrament Meeting as I looked around and seeing all the families I was filled with joy! I was grinning from ear to ear! That was one of the moments that I wish I could have slowed down time so I could have enjoyed it for longer!

This week several missionaries expressed concern that the members were not willing to help
fellowship new investigators. Here are some Ideas for getting members involved:
1) Make sure that we teach every lesson with a member present. (active or less active)
2) Go to the ward council and tell them about the people and ask them what they could do to help.
3) Talk to individual ward members and invite them to do specific things like ask your investigator to sit by them in church.
4) Give a talk in the ward and give examples of people who had changed after baptism and how great they were, how the Lord loves them, that in His church there is room for everyone, etc.
5) Go visit active members when you don't have a teaching appointment or for FHE and preach the scriptures to them.
6) Pray for the ward members so you can love them and they can love and fellowship the investigators.
You will think of many other ways to help them but don't be discouraged. Don't be angry. Don't doubt the outcome. You will succeed. It may take all of these ways, and many more many times, but remember "the worth of souls is great in the sight of God”.

Here are some excerpts from other great missionary letters:
-----Recently I have been working on The teaching skill of asking questions from PMG 10. As I have begun working on asking questions I have realized how horrible I am at doing it! If anything this past week I have noticed how much I need to improve with asking questions! Questions are so crucial because they cause the investigator or Less Active to think and it gets them talking. When they start talking we are able to see what they are understanding and what they are not!

-----"They talked about rescuing lost sheep and how that painting of the Savior with a sheep over his neck is all clean and pretty and beautiful. But in reality, the lost sheep are in a van down by the river, stuck in the mud and barbed wire, their coat full of burrs and ticks and fleas. So when we go to rescue them it requires us to get down in the mud and bleed a little as we get a little cut up on the barbed wire, etc. It is sometimes sort of messy work working with messy lost people. But when you can help get them unstuck and hosed off, etc. it is very rewarding."
--Sister Chausow's dad

----She's looking to give up smoking and when she saw us one Sunday, she felt like we were God's messengers and told us of her struggles with drugs. Sitting down and listening to her, she has a strong love for Jesus Christ and she's coming to repent of a lot problems she's had in the past. Lucky for us, there is a Stop Smoking Workshop that can really help her out with overcoming her smoking habit! This coming Tuesday is going to pretty amazing with what Elder _________ and I are looking to help her out with! "If ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren (and sisters) ye have done it unto me."

----Elder____________ and I also have a baptism lined up. A man by the name of Jerry bore his testimony at church this past Sunday. He's taken the discussions from missionaries in the past, but never felt that he needed to join the church, until now. After sacrament meeting, he asked us to come over to his house this week to set a date for baptism. I'm excited! I've been praying long and hard that we could have a baptism (it's been over 2 years since Elders have had a baptism in ______). For a lot of branches, a baptism represents more than new membership, it also represents hope. Perhaps this'll generate a new excitement for missionary work in _______. Regardless, I'm excited for all of the possibilities.

----Of course missionary work is hard, but it is simple if you know the secret
if you want people to change call them to repentance
if you want people to teach talk to everyone
if you want investigators to be baptized teach with the Spirit, care for them, and be bold when you invite them
you want the Spirit don't read the scriptures, but study them, write down the impressions you receive and apply them in every day.
I didn't come here on a vacation, or to have fun, I came here to change, to become, to grow, to work, work, work not just work but to work hard not just work hard but to be a great examples for others.

----We had quite a few negative experiences this past week but I promised myself that I would not dwell on them. I think I have gotten used to people that are not very big fans of LDS missionaries though. We had quite a few less than friendly words thrown at us as we biked the streets of____, but it happens so much that I just do not care anymore. It kind of bothers me at first, but then I always just end up laughing. I am not sure why, it just makes me laugh now. I have found that if you just always conduct yourself in a righteous way, and be polite to people, it can go a long way, and it makes people notice something different about "Those boys in the white shirts and ties," that they find good.

----Connie came! She's a new investigator that we have that is really trying to find her way back on the right path. She LOVED church and she fit right in! A member of the ward came up and asked her when she was going to be baptized and I was terrified that she was going to freak out, but she said she was thinking a lot about it! WHAT?!??! Since when!? It was so amazing!

I hope you had time to read all of these I thought they were all amazing but this one will blow you away:
---- I decided I am going to take this kid tracting and show him all the skills I have acquired thus far in my mission because if you know me I love talking to people so I wanted to show this new missionary how its done haha but this elder has been tracting a ton lately with his trainer and he pretty much told me elder ____________ I don't want to tract we never see success when we do it, haha so after he told me that I just glared at him haha I was like you haven't had success because you don't have FAITH that it will work!!! haha So then I looked at him right in the eyes and I said we are getting into someone house and teaching TODAY!! MARK MY WORDS! haha he probably thought I was crazy but he was like alright whatever so anyways we bike like 5 miles to the area we are planning on tracting and before we started we said a prayer and asked Heavenly Father to soften someone's heart enough to listen to us, tracting is all about your attitude even though it sucks sometimes but if you have a good attitude about it miracles happens so we tract this entire street and we are just getting doors slammed in our face right and left I could tell this elder i was with was getting a little discouraged I was to, too be honest but as we got to the end of the street we had about 4 houses left and we knocked on this door and this lady cracked the door open just barely so I
just start talking I think I complimented her yard and here house just so she at least had a reason to say thank you, I just wanted to get a conversation started so anyways I just keep asking her questions and the more questions i asked the more she started talking but keep in mind the door is just barely cracked open she was really stand offish at first she said "im Baptist I don't want your religion" but as I just kept talking with her it was kinda going nowhere I was about to just end it but I felt the spirit like I have never felt it before in my life and I was prompted to just ask this lady if she was happy in life, it was so random but I was prompted to say it so I said "Ma'am are you happy with the way your life is going right now?" the next thing we know she opened up the door completely and with tears rolling down her eyes she said my son passed away a couple months ago and tomorrow is his birthday and I have been praying that someone would come help me out during this hard time" Me and this elder were almost in tears after she said this Heavenly Father literally sent us to this lady's house to help her during this incredibly hard time. My testimony grew 10 fold that day I know without a doubt that Heavenly Father is mindful of everyone!! He sent us to that lady that day to help her out, so me and this brand new elder bore our testimonies about the plan of salvation and I promised her that her son is ok and that she will see him again she was just crying and crying I have never felt the spirit that strong before she was so grateful! Heavenly Father answered her prayer and
used us as missionaries as instruments in his hands to help her its amazing to see how Heavenly Father works! We set up a return appointment and me and elder _____ are going back to her house tomorrow to teach her the full plan of salvation lesson. Such a miracle!!!!

And it gets even better so we still had 2 more houses to knock on before we were done for the night and the very last house we knock on a lady in her 30's answered with 2 little kids and she instantly invited us in to her house so we went into her house and taught here the Restoration SHE LOVED IT she even started crying as we bore our testimonies she told us she has been praying to see what she should do in life and what would be best for here kids and she told us she loved what we taught and she wants to learn everything!! She told us she wants us to start coming over 2-3 times a week to teach her!! The names of these people is Shelia and Scharelle please keep them in your prayers.
my mission is changing my life this church is true I know it is with every fiber of my being I know its true the Plan of Salvation is real!

I could have put many more of your letters in this collection but i just wanted to give you the flavor. We love you all and thank you for being the kind of wonderful missionaries you are.

Congratulations on the baptism. Thank you for being such great examples.
